Event Details

Cory Band hails from the Rhondda in South Wales, where it was formed in 1884 and originally bore the name, Ton Temperance Band. In 1895, Sir Clifford Cory, Chairman of Cory Brothers Coal Company, heard the band and offered to provide financial assistance, resulting in the band’s change of name to Cory.

Having been the first non-English winner of the National Championship of Great Britain in 1974, six years later the band became European and in 1984, its centenary year, it won the third in a hat-trick of National titles at the Royal Albert Hall in London

The culmination of the band’s contest success came in 2000, following the appointment of Dr. Robert Childs as Music Director. During that year, it won both British Open and National Championships and made history in taking the British Open Shield home to Wales for the first time in the contest’s 148 year history.

This triumph was repeated in 2002, 2007 and 2009 when the band won its fourth British Open title. In 2008, Cory won the Brass in Concert Championship, the leading entertainment and presentation contest in the world and in the same year won the European Brass Band Championship in Stavanger, Norway, repeating that feat in Ostend, Belgium in 2009.

For the past three years Cory Band has been the number one ranked brass band in the world.

This year, this concert organised by Banbury United Football Club, will be supporting Frank Wise School and Katharine House Hospice.
